Galaxy S20 Ultra: Top camera features finally make sense, but battery life doesn’t (ongoing review)

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is the most advanced of Samsung’s new phones.

[Tutorial] Facebook [Deutsch] [HD] - YouTubeSarah Tew/CNET I began this ongoing review of the Galaxy S20 Ultra knowing that Samsung’s redesigned camera system and its massive 5,000-mAh battery would make or break the phone. I’ve spent the past few days testing its 108-megapixel main sensor and up-to-100x AI-assisted camera zoom, looking for reasons to use these over-the-top features in real life. I finally found it.

But during my day out shooting in the atmospheric, coastal city of Monterey, California, the S20 Ultra’s battery life also came into question. I’ll break both observations down below. But before I do, just a reminder that these are my evolving impressions, which change as new information and observations come to light. They’re by no means my final thoughts, so I hope you’ll stick around for the rated review and specific buying advice about who this phone is for and if it’s worth the asking price.

Remember, too, that the S20 Ultra is the most advanced of Samsung’s new Galaxy S20 phones, with the largest screen size (6.9 inches), the biggest battery and the most camera toys compared to the Galaxy S20 Plus and standard Galaxy S20 (scroll to the end for a full specs comparison). It’s also the most expensive, starting at $1,400 for the 256GB version (£1,199 for the 128GB version or AU$1,999), compared to $1,000 for the S20 and $1,200 for the S20 Plus.

The core software and hardware features, including a fast 120Hz screen refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and 5G readiness remain the same for all S20 phones. (The base S20 model is a little more complicated, supporting the Sub-6 type of 5G, except for Verizon.)

And now, here’s my breakthrough understanding about the S20 Ultra’s camera, battery and more.

How the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s camera changed my mind
I admit I was optimistic but skeptical when I started testing the Galaxy S20’s two marquee camera features, the 108-megapixel main camera sensor and 100x “space zoom.” They skirt the edge of gimmick. But a day spent photographing things I love in a place dear to my heart made me understand the value of these features in a more personal way — which is exactly the test I was going for.

I spent the day with my mom clambering the same coastal rocks and walking the same paths that I have nearly every year since my childhood. We laughed at overconfident squirrels on the hunt for human food they definitely shouldn’t be eating; peered into tide pools filled with hermit crabs and folded-in sea anemones; felt the salt wind whip our faces and watched the Pacific’s majestic waves crash upon ocean rock. These are things I naturally want to photograph and share, and so that’s what I did.

The promise of the Ultra’s 108-megapixel sensor is to give you more detail when you crop into a shot. I initially found that wasn’t always the case, depending on what it is you’re shooting. First, you have to select the setting or else the camera will take 12-megapixel photos, using a process called pixel binning.

A deep crop edited after taking this photo from high above with the S20 Ultra’s 108-megapixel camera setting.

Jessica Dolcourt/CNET Second, I learned that I’d have better luck with photos that weren’t too close up. For example, I shot a mid-distance photo of blue mussels spiking a rock. I’d have had to wade in to get close enough for a macro, but taking a quick photo in 108 let me crop in with excellent detail on one cluster or another. To get fine detail on a towering flower planted along the coastal path, a regular old macro shot was more than enough.

I’ve always said that the benefit of extreme zoom is to close a physical distance you can’t overcome to see the thing you want to see — like the cornice of a palace or a celebrity on stage. The photo may not be frame-worthy, but it’s better than having nothing at all.

In Monterey, the S20 Ultra’s 10x, 30x and even 100x zoom, which rely on AI algorithms, were useful for photographing giant cormorants clustered on a rock and a man in a chartreuse kayak paddling far out from the shore. When I left Mom to clamber up a hill of rocks, both zoom and 108-megapixel photos let me photograph her waving from below.

These probably aren’t features you’ll use every day, but I’m starting to feel that I might use them more than I initially thought.

— Jessica Dolcourt (@jdolcourt) February 23, 2020 A few more camera details

Samsung said it made the S20’s sensors three times larger than those of the Galaxy S10 to let in more light.

Photos are clear, sharp and colorful overall. Here are some test shots from the Galaxy S20 Ultra so far.

108-megapixel images take up far more space, say two to eight times the storage for many shots.

Photos taken at 10x and 30x zoom are better quality than 100x zoom.

At 100x, the camera’s space zoom gets too shaky for clear handheld shots. Use a tripod or monopod, https://www.facebook.com/ or stabilize it against a surface.

Some photos I shot close-up were actually noisier in 108 when I zoomed in (on the laptop screen and the phone screen) than they were taken with the standard photo mode.

Battery life with the 120Hz screen
The Galaxy S20 devices support 120Hz refresh rates on the screen. That means its pixels refresh 120 times a second, twice that of the standard 60Hz refresh rate. The idea is to make everything from scrolling and animations to gameplay liquid smooth. The feature isn’t on by default, and it isn’t in the quick access bar, so you have to turn it on yourself. Samsung expects you to either use it all the time or never, rather than having you toggle it for gaming and then reverting. The choice, of course, is yours.

Using 120Hz immediately took a battery toll on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Granted, I hit the phone hard with three hours of Google Maps navigation to and from Monterey. And I constantly used the phone to photograph and record my surroundings. But I lost power at a higher rate than I’d expect for a device with such an generous battery. After 10.5 hours, https://www.facebook.com/ I had dropped from 100% to 12%, and still had hours of evening to go. Thankfully, the phone fully charged in under an hour, using the 25-watt charger that comes in the box.

It’s hard to say how long the battery would have lasted with the 60Hz refresh rate. Maybe I’d have seen a dip too, but I’m not sure that the extra smoothness from the 120Hz screen is worth battery anxiety for me. Meanwhile, the battery testing continues.

So turns out you CAN run down a 5,000mAh battery pretty low in 9 hours. It’s easy! at 8:30am + 3 hours driving navigation, + nonstop photo and video + 120Hz screen refresh rate – 5G (4G only for me) #GalaxyS20Ultra pic.twitter.com/7BuBk3RnVW

— Jessica Dolcourt (@jdolcourt) February 23, 2020 Battery life without 120Hz or 5G: Very good

Straight out of the box, I had confidence that the Galaxy S20 Ultra could withstand most things I threw at it — at least over 4G data and using the 60Hz default screen refresh rate. (I’ve already mentioned the apparent battery toll of the 120Hz mode above.)

As for 5G, these faster speeds are known to drain battery reserves faster than 4G, but that’s not something I’ve been able to quantify yet. At this point, the Galaxy S20 Ultra isn’t quite calibrated to AT&T’s 5G network, and I’ve been testing on an AT&T SIM. AT&T and Samsung assure me that by the time the Ultra arrives on store shelves, 5G will be good to go. I also swapped in a T-Mobile SIM card to use all day, but wasn’t able to find 5G signal anywhere I was yesterday.

On 4G, the S20 Ultra retained impressive battery reserves even after hours of hotspotting to my laptop, streaming Netflix video, and uploading dozens of photos and video over cellular. I’m not at all concerned about running low.

Christian Mingle and more religious Android apps with downright sinful privacy policies

Facebook: How To Insert Link into Wall - YouTubeBefore you crack open that Bible app, make sure it’s not on our list of data devils.

Sanda Stanca/EyeEm/Getty Sometimes developers of religious apps take the edict to be “fishers of men” too far, and sometimes the faithful put their faith in the wrong apps. As public focus on the security of apps on the Google Play Store intensifies following years of data leaks, adware infections, security scandals and malware contagions, little coverage has been devoted to one of the most commonly exploited types of Android app: those aimed at believers.

Religious apps have long been dangerous, malware-laden territory. A widely profiled 2015 white paper from security research firm Proofpoint analyzed more than 5,600 unique Bible apps for Android and iOS. Proofpoint categorized 140 Google Play Store apps as “high risk” over suspicious behavior and flagged 208 apps for malicious code. The firm went so far as to say it had found more malware in Bible apps than even gambling apps.

Proofpoint’s study wasn’t restricted solely to Christian-audience software, either. Of the 4,500 Quran apps it analyzed, 16 contained malware and 38 were classified “high risk.” Only two of the 200 Torah apps available at the time contained malware.

Despite these findings, Proofpoint did not share the names of any of the malware-laden apps at the time, telling several media outlets it was negotiating with the apps’ developers. But things have been quiet on the religious app front since then. A spokesperson for Proofpoint confirmed that the firm has not since released the names of the offending apps covered in the 2015 study.

Security issues with many religious apps — and apps in general, for that matter — start with permissions. “Normal” permissions are usually granted by Android — these let apps stay awake during use or get online when you tell them to. But “dangerous” permissions ask for sensitive data that, if mishandled, could easily compromise your privacy.

Some permissions that could be considered dangerous may not put you in harm’s way — like when a book-reading app asks permission to save a book to your phone so you can read it offline. But sometimes these dangerous permissions include unnecessary requests for more information than needed. Those red flags alert you to an app’s overall security: That book-reading app doesn’t need to read your list of phone calls, pinpoint your exact location or change your system settings in order to function, does it?

Read more: 7 Android VPN apps you should never use because of their privacy sins

Most security researchers express a general rule of thumb: The fewer permissions an app requests, the better. For the faithful, a similar note of guidance might be found in Proverbs 20:19: “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.”

These six popular apps aimed at a Christian audience talk to your phone far more than is necessary, potentially eliciting sensitive information. Here’s what you need to know before letting them onto your Android phone.

It’s time to turn over the table on data-trading Bible apps.

Godong/robertharding King James Bible apps
Little appears to have changed since the Proofpoint study emerged and Bible apps in the Play Store started coming under scrutiny. When you search for “Bible” in the Play Store, four of the top five search results request dangerous permissions from users.

King James Bible (KJV) from Salem New Media (a freemium app) has accumulated more than 10 million installs and a rap sheet from Privacy International, which discovered the app sending user data to Facebook in March after claiming it had stopped. The app is still available on the Play Store, and still makes egregious requests of users’ data.

New Salem Media wants the app to begin running as soon as your phone powers on (instead of when you open the app). Then it wants to know what other apps you have on your phone, what they’re doing now and in the past, who you’ve been calling and how often, and your precise location. The company also tracks your activity and gives advertisers access to you, according to its own privacy policy.

With more than 5 million installs, the most popular free Bible app, according to the Play Store, is King James Bible (KJV) from iDailybread.org.

It asks for many of the same permissions as New Salem Media. It also wants permission to create new accounts (of what kind? it doesn’t say), set passwords and change your settings to allow it to update whenever it wants. It also asks for permission to throw itself on top of other apps you’re using — giving it the power to change the appearance of your other apps or serve pop-up ads — and to start running as soon as you turn your phone on.

The 99 Android apps maintained by Watchdis Prayers — including its King James Bible app — go even further: The King James Bible app wants permission to do all of the same things the above Bible apps want to do, and then it wants to control near-field communications — the system used by Android Pay.

If you’ve installed any apps maintained by Watchdis Prayers, we strongly recommend uninstalling them and updating your passwords for any social media or email accounts you use on your phone — at least until you know what this company is doing with such a massive amount of personal data and access to your digital wallet.

Watchdis Prayers’ only available contact information is a Gmail account purportedly manned in the Netherlands. It has no current privacy policy on its website, and offers no further information about who’s running the show. A cached version of the company’s site indicates it had a privacy policy last month, but it reads almost as cryptically as the blank page that replaced it.

None of the three companies above responded to requests for comment.

YouVersion Bible
YouVersion Bible is notorious for privacy violations and dangerous data collection. Yet, here it is: still seated firmly in the Play Store, racking up over 100 million installs with a whopping 22 permission requests.

When Slate wrote about it back in 2013, the app’s creator said that YouVersion collected so much data even Google took notice and sent its own engineers to help parent company LifeChurch.tv “sort out how to store and analyze the flow.”

Today, the app asks for all of your contacts’ information and your precise GPS location. Then it asks for not only the information for any accounts you have for other apps on your phone, but the ability to use the accounts on your device. Like many others in this list, YouVersion wants to start running as soon as your phone turns on, instead of waiting until you open the app.

The app’s creator, Bobby Gruenewald, told Slate all that data collection “is used to improve the experience of the app, with the aim of helping people globally to engage with the Bible.”

I think you should find a more secure app to engage with the Good Word.

But following this article’s publication, Gruenewald reached out to CNET to make a compelling case for YouVersion, and offered an update on how things have been developing since 2013. He said YouVersion has not only pared down its data collection, but actively aims to reduce it further.

He said he and his team now want a third-party privacy audit.

“It’s horrifying to me personally that any user would feel like we violated their privacy,” he said. “We view their experiences with the Bible as sacred.”

As Android app permissions have been narrowed through the years, YouVersion’s data collection practices have aggressively followed suit, Gruenewald said. He also said YouVersion has worked hard to never store user data that doesn’t specifically help the app function.

YouVersion had no choice but to request broad permissions like those requesting call log access in order to get the more narrow part of that permission, which would allow the app, for instance, to silence its audio when a user receives a phone call, Gruenewald said. The company has never implemented the use of the data, he added.

“We’ve actually worked with Google and others to make sure that we’re always refining best practices and wanting where possible to remove, if possible anything that wasn’t necessary,” he said. “I do this as an ongoing process.”

Despite being regularly approached by third parties through the years who beg for a slice of YouVersion’s anonymized data, Gruenewald said his company is a ministry that refuses to follow the business models of other free Bible apps who either monetize user data or share it.

“There are definitely some bad actors out there … and some of them have been extremely egregious and have made their app look like our app, and we’ve had to go through the court system,” he said.

“Because of that, we want to do our best to be the gold standard.”

In an app market crowded with data exploiters, YouVersion’s ambition to establish the gold standard is a welcome one. And if it follows through with that audit, I’ll be the first to sing its praises.

Television evangelist and conservative political activist Pat Robertson poses in the control room for his 700 Club TV show.

Wally McNamee/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images Christian Broadcasting Network
Famous for its 700 Club programming and its controversial host Pat Robertson, the Christian Broadcasting Network maintains 11 Android apps for download in the Google Play Store. The largest purveyor of the apps surveyed here, CBN also maintains one of the most detailed privacy policies we’ve seen. We don’t like what it’s doing with your data, https://www.facebook.com/ but we do like that it explains its usage in three readily accessible pages with layman-friendly language.

Permission requests vary among each of CBN’s 11 apps, but three ask for enough information to warrant sober concern.

CBN Radio presents itself as an app that just wants to broadcast your favorite Christian music. But there are enough requests in its permission list to present a case for avoiding the app altogether. It wants to know your precise location, and what kinds of phone calls you’re making and to whom and how often. It wants to be able to take pictures and video. And why does a radio streaming app need to begin running as soon as you turn on your phone? It doesn’t.

The myCBN Prayer & Devotional App has even more red flags. With more than 100,000 installs on the Play Store, the app wants to know everything CBN Radio knows, plus it wants to control your flashlight, turn your Bluetooth settings on and off (a notable security concern), get a full list of all your contacts and any accounts on your phone, take control of your camera and microphone, https://www.facebook.com/ and control your location update notifications.

The most concerning security issue with CBN apps may be that found in the permission requests of its children’s app, Superbook Kids Bible, Videos & Games. It’s generally not a good idea to allow an app to disable your lock screen, nor to start running as soon as your phone is turned on. But giving a kids’ app permission to take photos and videos of your child, as this one does — even as part of a feature allowing kids to upload their own pictures — after you’ve allowed it to disable your lock screen may be a bridge too far.

Even if you trust CBN with access to your intimate information, data breaches have become a near-monthly reality for competitively secure companies. You can request CBN delete your data, according to its policy, but once your data is copied into the hands of CBN’s many third-party contractors, and their third-party contractors, there’s no way to unring the bell.

We would love to know why CBN needs this much access and control to provide seemingly simple services, and whether it has a plan in place in the event of a serious hack. CBN declined to be interviewed for this story, however.

Don’t give up your data on the first dating app.

Getty Images Christian Mingle and Christian Matrimony
Well-known dating app Christian Mingle has more than half a million installs on the Play Store, and was hit with a $500,000 fine in October of 2018 for automatically renewing subscriptions without users’ express consent. It requests an overwhelming 23 permissions from its users, including some particularly curious ones.

Why does a dating app want to disable your lock screen, then get a full list of all the apps on your phone and your history of usage for each? Why does Christian Mingle need to know your precise location, when you’re making a phone call, who you’re talking to, and how often you talk to them? Most curiously, why does Christian Mingle need to control your flashlight?

The lesser-known Christian Matrimony app, from CommunityMatrimony.com, likewise raises questions. With more than 100,000 installs, the app wants to change your audio settings and get a list of all the apps you’ve already installed on your phone. Then, like Christian Mingle, it wants to find out who you’re making phone calls to. It goes beyond Christian Mingle, however, and asks for permission to directly call phone numbers.

Representatives for both Christian Mingle and Christian Matrimony said they’d have someone call us back. So far that hasn’t happened.

Cold Case Christianity
The Cold Case Christianity app is a promotional tool for the writing of public speaker J. Warner Wallace, with more than 10,000 installs on the Play Store. Once given permission, it can read your personal contact list, find out who you’ve been calling and how often, and record your audio and change your audio settings. It can also take a peek at your pictures.

The most intrusive permissions allow the app to look at your personal calendar and confidential information, then create or change events on your calendar and email guests to those events (your friends, coworkers and anyone else in your contacts) without your knowledge.

Apps generally shouldn’t do this. If they do, you should be able to find out what that app is doing with your information. But in the case of Cold Case Christianity, the website now redirects to the white-label commercial site Buildfire, and the privacy policy is likewise gone, last seen in 2017.

Wallace’s only contact information appears to be his booking agent, Matt Croaker, who returned our call.

“I don’t think he’ll be interested in commenting,” Croaker said of Wallace.

The Bible Verses App from SpringTech has been classified by a number of credible virus-watching companies as a browser hijacker, and infects your browser with spyware-packing trojans. It takes over your browser and forces you to redirect to its fake search engine, then it tracks all of your browsing activity and prevents you from changing any browser settings until it’s removed.

Parent development company SpringTech no longer appears to have any contact information on the web. Get this extension and any related files off of your computer as soon as you can. Then change the passwords to all of your online accounts.

To this end, PC Risk has a reliable walk-through on how to uninstall the Bible Verses App.

Ex-FA boss hits out at football gambling deals

A former chief executive of the Football Association has claimed the sport needs to ‘wean’ itself off sponsorship deals with gambling companies.

Mark Palios said that the links between football and the betting industry have now gone ‘too far’.

His comments come after the Daily Mail revealed in January how the FA had sold streaming rights for the FA Cup to seven betting websites including Bet 365, which only made matches available if customers made a bet or paid into an account. The Gambling Commission is now investigating the deal.

Gambling Statistics From All Over The World

We all have the idea that many people like to gamble. But, you will feel surprised to know the total number of people who are involved in gambling activity and this number is increasing at a good pace because of the increasing popularity of online gambling in the last two decades. Let us try to understand the scope of the world of modern betting.

Trying to know exactly how many people around the world are involved in betting is just impossible. So, let’s not get involved in this which is out of scope. In this article, we are going to discuss the Online Gambling Statistics.

Online Gambling Stats

Online gambling or the world of online gambling is relatively new and https://www.facebook.com/ its regulations vary from authority to authority, as does reporting. By this, we can say that finding genuine gambling statistics can be a very tough task, although the technology of data reporting is getting better and better every year.

In the year 2013, a survey conducted by a research institute of Games data and market research found that a lot of information about the people who do gambling online and their betting tendency. But, the most shocking finding in the report was that 57% of online gamblers in the United States are women, which are just opposite of our expectations. It is worth mentioning that this statistics also includes social casino gambling which is obviously not of real money. In addition to this, the survey also revealed that around 40% gamblers tend to be young and are in between 21 to 34 of age.

Other countries have taken some initiatives in order to measure the growth and size of the online betting. In the United Kingdom, a survey was conducted in the 2010 and first quarter of 2011 found that over 11% of the British people had actively taken part in “remote gambling” over any given the period of four weeks. This gambling statistics is definitely more than the figures who were involved in gambling market in an entire year just a few years earlier. In the year 2012, the size of the online gambling market of the UK was pegged at 2.28 billion which was 1 billion more than that in the year 2008.

Last but not the least, https://www.facebook.com/ the trend of mobile gambling is also on the rise, especially in just one decade. In the year 2012, the number from the UK revealed that mobile betting was increased by 75% year-over-year which is more than 25% of all searches related to online gambling. This will not be a surprising factor if I say that the experts of many industries believe that in 5 to 10 years, smart devices will become a prime source of online betting for the people staying in different parts of the world.

Online Gambling Statistics says that the number of the people around the world who are getting involved in online gambling is increasing at a fast pace. In fact, smart devices like mobile phones and tablets are now becoming a prime source of online gambling.

Best web hosting providers: InMotion,Hostgator,Bluehost and more

Welcome to the CNET 2020 directory of web hosting services. In this directory, we’ll look at a few of the best web hosting providers like Bluehost, A2Hosting, Hostinger, DreamHost, HostGator, InMotion Hosting and more. In this evaluation of the best web hosting providers, we’re featuring commercial web hosting companies that offer WordPress, VPS, shared hosting and many more web hosting services, along with a variety of annual and monthly plans.
Let’s look at each of the web hosting companies below in a little more depth to help you find the best web hosting provider to meet your needs.
Special offer: Save up to 60% on hosting and more with Bluehost!
DreamHost
Shared hosting starting at  $2.59/mo.
WordPress hosting starting at  $2.59/mo.
VPS hosting starting at $10/mo.
Dedicated servers starting at $149/mo.
Cloud hosting starting at $4.50/mo.
Web hosting is, no doubt, as much a cutthroat business as any other. But that’s why the fact that DreamHost’s ongoing offer to provide a free shared website to 501(c)(3) nonprofits is so notable. (Full disclosure: A nonprofit I was affiliated with once took advantage of this offer.)

Beyond that, DreamHost is a top website hosting company for many reasons. It operate its own control panel, which is convenient and easy to understand. While phone customer support isn’t available 24/7, it is responsive to live chat and tickets. The company uses super-fast SSDs for all its storage, has a free SSL certificate (for https://www.facebook.com/ more secured web browsing) and provides SSH access for those plans that are intended for more technical users.

Other things we like about Dreamhost: First, the company’s pricing is pretty transparent. There are no hidden gotchas in the rates. Plus, DreamHost provides a 97-day money back guarantee. There’s quite literally zero risk in giving them a try.

Shared hosting starting at $2.95/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $2.95/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $18.99/mo.

Dedicated hosting starting at $79.99/mo.
When you sign up to Bluehost, you’ll get a free domain name for the first year, along with a free SSL certificate (allowing you to operate a secure website for your personal use or business).

If you’re a WordPress user, Bluehost is definitely a web hosting provider to consider. While its managed WordPress hosting is a little more pricey than basic shared hosting, the company has both specific WordPress and WooCommerce hosting plans available (along with management support). It also offers a site migration service for an additional fee.

The web hosting provider got bonus points for its policy of performing regular daily backups, even on the lowest-priced shared hosting accounts. Be aware, though, that the promotional price on the low-cost shared hosting does go up after the promotional period. That said, Bluehost offers 24/7 phone support, a 30-day money-back guarantee and SSH access for certain plan options.

See all Bluehost plansA2 Hosting

Shared hosting starting at $2.96/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $2.96/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $9.80/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $5/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $99.59/mo.

A2 Hosting does a lot of things right. It offers Linux and Windows-based servers, SSD, caching, CDN and SSL for all plans. While some plans offer uptime monitoring and regular backups, all plans offer malware scanning and automatic patching and updates.

The hosting provider offers a managed hosting service called HostGuard. Subscribers of this service have access to a 24/7/365 “Guru Crew” support team that manages network, hardware, software and security. Managed hosting for WordPress customers begins at $9.78/mo and for VPS customers at $25/mo.

The web hosting provider offers solid plans with a good selection of features. The one area we’re concerned about is how it presents its offers. Like many hosting providers, its published pricing is a bit misleading. You’re not getting hosting for $2.96/mo unless you pay $71 for two years of service. Renewals are generally at a higher rate, although a salesperson we spoke to advised you ask for a “loyalty discount.”

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that, like other web host providers, A2 Hosting’s unlimited plans aren’t actually unlimited. It expect you to use its service like “similarly situated customers.” This is like being on a highway. If everyone is going a few miles above the speed limit, you’re probably okay, but if you’re barreling down the fast lane past everyone else, you’re probably going to be asked to slow down.

The company offers a solid 30-day money back guarantee it calls an “Anytime” money back guarantee. Yeah…kind of. You can ask for your money back at any time, but after your first 30 days, how much you get back will depend on a painfully complex pro-rating system.

But, again, operationally it’s quite strong. 24/7/365 customer support is available not only by live chat and email, but by phone. It offers free site migrations with some dedicated attention paid to making a transfer as smooth as possible. And, if you’re willing to go for one of the higher-end plans, the company has put some serious attention into performance and caching.

Shared hosting starting at $0.99/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $0.99/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

Cloud hosting starting at $9.99/mo.

Note: On Aug. 25, Hostinger revealed that up to 14 million users might have been impacted by a security breach. The company reset passwords for all impacted accounts. Original post follows.

Hostinger, a hosting provider based out of Lithuania, boasts it signs up a new client every five seconds. With 29 million users in 178 countries and subsidiaries in the US, Indonesia and Brazil, the company has been in operation since 2004.

Hostinger has a nice selection of plans, all of which can be optimized for WordPress. We particularly liked that even the least expensive plans offered some level of SSH access for those who need it. The company gained points for its offering of SSD performance, dedicated IP, and regular backups for some plans.

What sets the company apart is its first-year hosting price of less than a buck a month. The company’s least expensive plan is a startlingly low 80 cents a month. This is the least expensive hosting program we’ve seen, although the price does go up after that first year. In fact, most of the company’s plans increase after its promotional price expires.

Hostinger offers a 30-day money back guarantee with wording we wish more providers would use: “If for any reason you decide not to continue with Hostinger, we will offer a full refund on your purchase, no questions asked.” If you have any questions, the company has customer support with live chat lines available 24/7.

HostGator

Shared hosting starting at $2.75/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $5.95/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $19.95/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $29.95/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $119/mo.

Cloud hosting starting at $4.95/mo.
HostGator is a full-service hosting company, with plans for almost any need. Whether you’re starting out and need a very basic shared site, or need to be able to operate your own machine dedicated solely to your company, HostGator has a service that can help.

See also: HostGator in-depth review and hands-on testing

We like how HostGator not only allows more sophisticated site builders to customize their dedicated or virtual server, but also to choose Linux or Windows hosting. While HostGator doesn’t support SSDs on all plans, many of its servers can be equipped with the faster drives.

HostGator gained points for uptime monitoring and regular backups, along with free cPanel or Plesk. We liked that SSH is available for the more technically inclined site operators and that dedicated IP addresses could be purchased. We did take points off because it’s sometimes difficult to tell what the price is once promotional plans run their course. That said, with a generous 45-day money back guarantee, there’s a hosting solution for almost everyone at HostGator.

iPage

Shared hosting starting at $1.99/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $3.75/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $19.99/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $119.99/mo.
Probably the first thing most folks will notice about iPage is the low price for shared hosting service. At less than two bucks a month for the 36-month plan, you can buy three full years of hosting for under $75, a jaw-dropping deal no matter how you look at it.

That two buck price will go to $7.99 up after your 36 months are over. The company does not claim to offer unlimited bandwidth, but low-end hosting plans generally don’t require a tremendous amount of traffic capacity. If you do sustain a big surge, contact the company and it’ll work with you.

The company now includes a bunch of freebies, even in its lowest-priced plans. It offers $100 in ad credits both for Google and Bing, along with free SiteLock web security.

We like how iPage offers 24/7 telephone customer support and live chat and a 30-day guarantee on top of its low price.

See all iPage plans
InMotion Hosting

Shared business hosting starting at $2.95/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $4.99/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $13.99/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $22.99/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $105.69/mo.
We particularly like that the company offers free backups and SSH access, even on its lower-end plans. WordPress support with integrated WP-CLI is also available.

See also: InMotion in-depth review and hands-on testing

Here are some of the reasons the company gets a top rating. It offers an all-SSD infrastructure. It has 24/7 telephone customer support in addition to the ticket, email and live chat support options. It offers a basic site migration, in that it’ll unpack a site saved from another cPanel instance. It offers free SSL and free malware detection.

Rounding out the wins, InMotion offers a full 90-day money-back guarantee. On top of that, here’s a special money-saving hint. In a chat session confirming pricing and offerings, the operator offered me some special prices and deals that reduced the published price by a few bucks. I was also told that while promotional pricing does go up at the end of the offer period, if you contact customer service, InMotion has a “loyal customer discount” that may bring the price back down.

Shared hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $39.00/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $135/mo.

Cloud hosting starting at $110/mo.
The first thing that caught our eye about Complete Internet Hosting was a great answer to my biggest complaint about hosting providers. Most hosting providers will suck you in with a relatively aggressive starting price, but when it comes time to renew, the renewal price can be two or three times the original price. I’ve even found one company that renews at more than six times the original price.

The thing is, it’s very difficult to change hosting providers, so those with those big renewal up-charges count on locking you in. When that renewal bill shows up, it can be shocking, sometimes hundreds or even thousands of dollars more than you expect.

Complete Internet Solutions is not like that. The price they quote is your locked-in price. In addition, they offer a free twelve months on top of your term. So, if you sign up for two years at $3.95 a month, you pay $94.80 for the two years, and then pay nothing for another year. If you choose to renew at the end of those three years, you can repeat that pricing program without a fee increase. This is how it should be done.

Another thing that caught our eye was their support offerings. They’re available with US-based technical support via phone, live chat, and support ticket 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s nice to know that if help is needed, it’s available at all times of the day or night.

Finally, we were quite happy with their money-back guarantee. They offer a full 90-day guarantee (except for domain names you buy) and a pro-rated refund for the rest of your time. So if you want to cancel after 18 months and have six months left in your term, you’ll get back the cost of the six remaining months. It’s clear, it’s understandable, and it’s the straightforward way we’d like to see most providers use as a model.

MochaHost

WordPress starting at $2.48/mo.

Reseller starting at $9.87/mo.

VPS starting at $7.98/mo.

Cloud starting at $19/mo.

As dedicated coffee fans, we love the name MochaHost. The company has a wide range of offerings, but by far, the stand-out feature MochaHost provides is a 180-day money-back guarantee. That’s the best we’ve seen so far, and it removed just about all of the risk from any hosting experience.

Overall, we were impressed with how customer-centric the company’s offerings are. For example, unlike some of the hosting providers we’ve profiled (and deducted points from), MochaHost’s published prices don’t balloon once you’ve settled in with its service. It has a lifetime price-lock guarantee.

You get other customer-centric bonuses for 24/7 customer support, including 24/7 toll-free callback phone support, free domain name and SSL certificates for as long as you remain a MochaHost customer, a website builder with 500 free templates (and a service that will custom-design your site if you need) and a site migration service. In addition, all plans are e-commerce ready and come with free shopping cart software.

For more business-oriented customers, it offers a full range of VPS and cloud hosting, along with serious Java Tomcat hosting, including shared and private JVMs, as well as Java VPS offerings. With a company named MochaHost, you’d expect some quality Java support and it has it. So brew yourself a cuppa, open a browser window and give MochaHost a spin. You have half a year to make up your mind, so if it turns out MochaHost really isn’t your cup of tea, it’ll understand.

Shared hosting starting at $4.99/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $4.99/mo.
Web Hosting Hub has an entry-level starting price, but some surprisingly valuable benefits for such a low-price entrant.

In particular, Web Hosting Hub uses BoldGrid as a site builder. BoldGrid is actually an add-on to WordPress, so there’s no lock-in. This overcomes the major problem of most site builders: you’re locked into that host and that tool, often requiring you to completely rebuild your site if you want to expand. By using a WordPress-based solution, all of the rather considerable power of WordPress is available for future expansion.

We liked how Web Hosting Hub describes its new customer process. It tells new customers, “We walk you through setting up your account in a personal on-boarding call.” The company has a few other wins as well. It offers an all-SSD infrastructure, automatic vulnerability patches and a custom firewall, SSH access for certain plans, free site migration and an excellent 90-day money-back guarantee.

VPS hosting starting at $29.95/mo.
Web Hosting Pad has a strong international presence. The company has servers in US, Hong Kong, mainland China and Korea, and you can specify which server and location you want when you sign up.

In terms of what many vendors call unlimited service, Web Hosting Pad’s terms of service indicate that its definition of unlimited is what it calls “incremental.” Basically, as you need more capability, it wants to discuss that with you, both to help you get the most out of its services, and to make sure you’re using its systems without abusing them.

The company’s entry-point pricing is extremely low, and while this will buy you up to three years of very low-cost hosting, do be aware that its post-promotion price will increase substantially, putting its subsequent year pricing more in line with the rest of its competitors. That said, we liked its 24/7 phone customer support, SSD support on some plans and 30-day money-back guarantee.

HostPapa

Shared hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $29.99/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $44.99/mo.
Established back in 1998, HostPapa operates three state-of-the-art data centers. Equipped with multiple GigE fiber connections to the internet backbone, the company built out seismically braced racks and cabinets, fully redundant Liebert HVAC cooling systems, a diesel generator that can run for weeks and a preaction dry pipe fire suppression system.

All of this infrastructure has been built out to support the a wide range of hosting services. The family-owned company gains points for understanding the importance of transaction security by offering free AutoSSL and Let’s Encrypt SSL encryption for its plans. While the company offers sophisticated services for technically strong clients, it also has a Weebly web builder option to get you up and running quickly.

Some plans offer SSD performance, and while there’s no uptime monitoring provided, the company also gained a nod for its offering of both Linux and Windows plans.

For the technically inclined, SSH access is available for a $2/mo upcharge, as is a dedicated IP address. The company allows for backup through its various dashboards and permits customers to build scripts to automate the backup process. While the company doesn’t automatically perform malware scans, you can request one if desired.

BigCommerce

Standard plan starting at $29.95/mo.

Plus plan starting at $79.95/mo.

Pro plan starting at $249.95/mo.
BigCommerce is a bit different from our other hosting plans in that it’s a SaaS (software-as-a-service) provider instead of an IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) provider. In other words, rather than renting space on a virtual machine where you setup and configure your own site, BigCommerce provides you with an app you login to that creates and online store.

So instead of worrying about servers and hosting applications, SSH and cPanel, you’re going to be paying more attention to the business applications you can integrate with, the selling channels you use and the products and inventory you spotlight.

The key benefit is that, out of the box, you are able to host securely, drive traffic, convert visitors, accept payments, and ship and fulfill orders. There’s even an API so that if you do scale and need special integrations unique to your business, you can make it happen.

Service price varies a lot. There are really two factors: how much you pay per transaction and the features offered. All plans charge $0.30 per transaction plus a percentage.

At the lowest end, you’ll be paying 2.9% of the amount you charge. Bumping up to the Plus plan gets you a lowered 2.5% of the transaction fee and adds Google customer reviews, the ability for customers to filter their product searches and custom SSL (a security certificate you may have already purchased).

The Pro plan is costly, but you get a lot. First, you share considerably less of each transaction’s cost, down to 2.2%. Then, on top of the Plus plan features, you get even more customized filtering, price lists, unlimited API calls, can have sales up to $400K per month, and get premium hosting account services.

If your hosting needs lean towards setting up an online store first and foremost, give BigCommerce a look.

1&1 IONOS

Shared hosting starting at $4/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $1/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $2/mo.

Dedicated server starting at $45/mo.

Cloud hosting starting at $15/mo.
1&1 IONOS provides a wide range of hosting services, along with a full e-commerce stack, domain name registration, Office 365 solutions and online marketing programs.

The company also offers higher-end Windows and Linux servers, available with Plesk and cPanel respectively. We were very intrigued to see that the company offers low-end Atom-based dedicated servers as well as the more traditional Xeon-based machines. One great resource for those doing some basic experimentation, or site development, is that it has a free, three-month trial for one of its lightly equipped Atom servers.

Be careful when placing an order with this company. Most of its plans jump in price after a year, but some (like dedicated servers) jump after six months, and the buck-a-month advertised basic web hosting plan jumps to $4 per month after just a month of service.

Good phone, email and https://www.facebook.com/ chat tech support, along with SSD-based hosting for faster performance and a free SSL certificate round out the offerings.

SiteGround

Shared hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $3.95/mo.

Reseller server starting at $42/year.

Cloud hosting starting at $80/mo.
SiteGround sits in the middle ground between a consumer web hosting provider and https://www.facebook.com/ those who cater to enterprise business solutions. If you’ve got a small business with more complex web needs than a typical small business, SiteGround is an ideal solution.

Although offerings start as low as $3.95 per month, we particularly like the company’s GoGeek plan, which is chock full of useful features, including access to a staging server and one-click Git repo creation.

There’s a lot to like about SiteGround, but the company did lose some points due to its policy of more than doubling your hosting costs after the first year. That nice $3.95/mo price shoots up to $11.95 per month. The company calls it a first-year discount, but that’s in very tiny, light gray print.

On the plus side, SiteGround offers free automatic daily backups, access to the Cloudflare CDN, high-performance SSDs for all plans, unlimited email accounts and integration of the free LetsEncrypt SSL certificate into sites. The company does limit bandwidth and storage, but even those who claim to offer so-called unlimited bandwidth and storage really have some limits in its terms of service.

SiteGround is proactive about protecting its customers’ security. It has a dedicated security team that writes necessary patches and web firewall rules that help mitigate zero-day vulnerabilities. It also uses an AI-based system to monitor and apply fixes to all its servers dynamically.

Finally, the company offers an entire tier of custom enterprise business services. So, if you start out with a small business and do GrowBig (as its mid-tier plan is named), you’ll be able to stay with the company no matter how big you get.

GreenGeeks

Shared hosting starting at $2.95/mo.

WordPress hosting starting at $2.95/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $19.95/mo.

VPS hosting starting at $5/mo.

Dedicated servers starting at $169/mo.
If you’ve ever been worried about the tremendous amount of power large data centers consume, you might want to sign up with Green Geeks. The “green” in the company’s name reflects the Green Geeks’ commitment to the environment. It purchases three times the energy it actually uses in wind energy credits, essentially putting energy back into the economy. The company does this through a form of renewable energy certificates, which, while a bit complicated, means that it’s not just energy neutral, i’s actually helping fuel the green energy economy.

Just because it’s green doesn’t mean it limits your power to do what you need with your websites. Rather surprisingly, its low-end account provides both SSH and WP-CLI (useful for automated WordPress deployments) access, along with Git preinstalled. It’s also possible to customize PHP and https://www.facebook.com/ PHP.INI, a capability unheard of on a low-end plan.

The company offers an all-SSD infrastructure, 24/7 phone support, 30-day money-back guarantee, free site migration and malware detection. The only concern we had is that after your discounted purchase period expires, basic shared hosting jumps to $9.95 per month.

 GlowHost

Shared hosting starting at $4.95/mo.

Reseller hosting starting at $24.95/mo.

Elastic Sites hosting starting at $13.49/mo.

Semi-dedicated servers starting at $49.99/mo.

Managed dedicated servers starting at $129.95/mo.

Cloud VPS hosting starting at $75.00/mo.

Enterprise cloud hosting starting at $199.00/mo.
GlowHost offers a wide variety of plans for those with very different hosting needs. We were particularly impressed with its media hosting plans, which include offerings for FFmpeg, SHOUTcast and podcast hosting.

The company doesn’t list a virtual private server offering, but it bills its Elastic Sites service as a VPS alternative, offering the ease of use of a simple shared hosting plan and the performance and scalability of a VPS. GlowHost also offers a number of different cloud hosting plans, with special attention to providing enterprise-grade services.

GlowHost earned our kudos for its 91-day money-back guarantee. It’s six days short of DreamHost’s 97-day guarantee, but with these numbers, who’s quibbling over a few days? The company also offers 24/7/365 phone support option and free cPanel offering for most plans. The company operates 18 data centers worldwide. Finally, the company garnered extra kudos by driving all its hosting services with wind power.

Planning your purchase
When shopping for web hosting services, keep a few things in mind.

Big price jump after promo period
Many web hosting services offer a low “starting price,” but require you to prepay for two or three years of service to get that price. After the promotional period, the renewal price for some web hosting services can be two, three, or even four times the initial promotional pricing. While the initial deal might be incredible, the cost of transferring your site (or paying the added fee) in a couple of years may be something to consider.

What “unlimited” really means
Many web hosting services offer so-called unlimited or unmetered service for whatever amount of bandwidth, disk storage and sites you use. It’s important to understand that most terms of service actually do limit the definition of “unlimited” to what’s considered reasonable use. The bottom line is simple: if you’re building a pretty basic website, unlimited means you don’t need to worry. But if you’re trying to do something excessive (or illegal, immoral or fattening), the fine print in the terms of service will trigger, https://www.facebook.com/ and you’ll either be asked to spend more or go elsewhere.

Watch out for page builders
Almost all the services offer some sort of drag-and-drop website builder that makes it easy to drag and drop items to build your page. These are great for getting started, but they often lock you into the service. Most page builders are proprietary to the service, or don’t create HTML that’s portable enough to be easily moved to another service if you decide it’s necessary.
Migration services are great, mostly
Migration or transfer services are often free or offered at a reasonable fee. These services help move your existing site to the new hosting provider. They can save a huge amount of hassle. Just remember that the migration process is often automated, and may fit in with the host’s processes and needs rather than yours. Not everything may migrate, and you may find the organization of the newly migrated site makes for harder maintenance in the long run.
Keep those concepts in mind as you shop for a hosting service. Our hosting service rankings are based on nearly 40 factors including quality of support, guarantee, availability of security services, performance architecture and promotional pricing.
More information about website hosting
You may also find other hosting services more appropriate depending on your needs. Hosting services such as cloud hosting, e-commerce hosting, reseller hosting and WordPress hosting are providing customers with a lot of flexibility.
Cloud hosting is a great option if you want to make sure you have a lot of storage space and allows you to utilize cloud computing to do so. There are many advantages to selecting cloud hosting, such as guaranteed server resources, redundant data storage and unlimited website growth.
E-commerce hosting is a popular option for many online businesses. In addition to providing customers with functionality for an e-commerce site, many web-hosting service providers are also capable of providing you with a web server to host your website, along with an email server and other standard web-hosting features.
Reseller hosting is ideal for users who are interested in using his or her allotted hard drive space and bandwidth to host websites on behalf of third-parties. To do this, the reseller will need to purchase the host’s services wholesale and then sell them to customers separately for a potential profit at retail prices.
WordPress hosting is an ideal platform for customers who are interested in creating a custom-built website. WordPress is popular among customers because it lets you build a professional custom website using a variety of templates, plug-ins and widgets.
What about after picking a provider?
Once you choose your provider, it’s time for you to open an account with the monthly plan that fits your needs. If you still have questions about which plan is suitable for you, call its customer support staff and have them assist you through the registration process. Companies will generally charge a credit card on a monthly basis, however, some companies will also offer discounts for paying a yearly payment at once.
After selecting a provider, it’s highly recommended that you test your internet speed to ensure that the data is being processed in a timely manner. You can take the Internet Speed Test to instantly assess your load time and current upload and download internet speeds.
How to speed up your website? Finding the fastest hosting provider?
People often think that a web host is the main cause of a slow website but, this is often not the case. When picking a provider, it’s important for find a hosting provider that is close to your users and has a good amount of RAM and fast CPU power. Beyond that, it’s often the way the website is set up that slows it down for users. To ensure that your website speed is optimal for users you need to make sure you pay attention to the following:
Minimize HTTP requests to the server. This means that we limit the amount of request that are required to download the page
Enable server caching. WIth server caching, after content has been download, the content is stored locally to allow faster access of the content and a reduction of strain on your web server.
Enable compression of larger files. Compression reduces the bandwidth of your files, resulting in a lower HTTP response.
Remove code bloat. Remove any unnecessary code or plugins.
Optimize images. This will reduce overall page size.
There are many other ways to increase website speed but, these are the items that will have the biggest impact.

These are the best coolers you can buy

Now playing: Watch this: 12 coolers tested: Which ones are worth the cash? 3:23 From tailgating to backyard parties, a dependable, portable cooler that isn’t a pain to lug around is an awfully nice thing to have on hand — and these days, you’ve got more options than ever. That’s largely thanks to the rise of “rotomolded” heavy duty coolers that promise significantly better insulation than traditional coolers, albeit at a much higher price than you’re probably used to paying — typically, hundreds of dollars.

These days, if you’re looking for a dependable, portable cooler that is easy to bring to everything from tailgating events to backyard parties, you’ve got more options than ever. before, thanks to the rise of “rotomolded” heavy duty coolers that promise significantly better insulation than traditional coolers. What’s the catch? Rotomolded coolers tend to come at much higher prices than you’re probably used to paying — typically, hundreds of dollars.

So are the best coolers actually worth their asking prices? And can any of the cheaper ones keep up? That’s what I wanted to know, so I turned to the usual suspects — Rubbermaid, Igloo, Coleman — and lugged their most popular models into the CNET Appliances test lab, where we pitted them against the insulated power of rotomolded coolers from Orca, Rovr, Yeti, Pelican, RTIC, Cabela’s and more. I was testing hard-sided coolers only, no soft coolers made the list. Our mission? Find the best coolers of the bunch — you know, the ones that pack a lot of stuff, are easy to carry, and are virtually indestructible — and figure out if the insulation offered by rotomolded, hard-sided coolers is worth the cold, hard cash needed to bring them home.

After several weeks of hands-on testing and countless ambient temperature readings, we were ready to separate the winners from the also-rans. Here’s everything I learned, starting with the coolers I think you should rush out and buy before your next camping trip or big family gathering.

Cabela’s Polar Cap Equalizer Cooler, $250
Orca Classic Cooler, $330

Enlarge ImageCabela’s cooler finished in a dead heat with last year’s rotomolded champ, the Orca Classic Cooler. I say take your pick between them.

Tyler Lizenby/CNET Rotomolding is short for rotational molding, a manufacturing technique that literally spins the mold as the plastic is poured in. The result: plastic that’s more durable, more uniform in density and, most importantly in the case of coolers, better at insulation.

Rotomolded coolers don’t come cheap, but they’re demonstrably better than the competition at keeping things cold. I mean, https://www.facebook.com/ it’s not like we have a portable refrigerator on our hands here, but it keeps cans COLD. The best we’ve seen from a pure performance standpoint comes from Yeti — but the extra-thick walls of that heavy-duty cooler mean that you’re getting seriously shortchanged on inches and capacity (more on that in just a bit).

Out of the rest of the rotomolded field, our top durable performers for insulation were the Orca Classic Cooler and https://www.facebook.com/ the Cabela’s Polar Cap Equalizer Cooler, which are fairly close in price. They essentially tied in my performance tests, so picking between them really comes down to taste. The Cabela’s cooler offers slightly more space inside (about 3 quarts’ worth), and it includes clever bottle openers built into the rubber latches. Meanwhile, the Orca cooler comes in better-looking colors, and it’s a bit more comfortable to carry since it doesn’t have rigid molded handles that jut out over top of the roped handles.

Igloo MaxCold Cooler, $57
RTIC 65 Cooler, $326

Enlarge ImageThe rotomolded RTIC 65 didn’t perform as well as the Yeti, Cabela’s or Orca models, but with roughly a 73-quart capacity, it also had a bigger job on its hands than those three. Currently available for $326, it’s about as close to a value pick as you’ll find among rotomolded coolers.

Tyler Lizenby/CNET If you just want a dependable cooler that’s not too expensive, put the Igloo MaxCold at the top of your list. Prices vary based on where and when you buy, but I scored mine on sale last year for $45. That makes it the only cooler available for less than $50 that remains in the top five of my performance tests, a list that now includes two years’ worth of contenders. In fact, it finished in fourth. Only the Yeti, Cabela’s and Orca managed to outperform it — and again, each of those costs closer to $300.

The MaxCold’s plasticky build and dated design aren’t anything fancy to look at, but it covers the basics by including a drainage spout and a latch for the lid (not every cooler in this price range does). Plus, it’s sturdy enough to sit on, which could come in handy during your next camping trip. All of that adds up to a lot of value — enough so that the MaxCold earned an overall score of 8.2 here on CNET, higher than any other cooler I’ve reviewed.

Available at AmazonLooking for a rotomolded value? Check out the RTIC 65. It’s a large cooler that’ll hold about twice as many cans as the Yeti. The 1-year warranty is shorter than you’ll get with most other rotomolded options, but if you just want a budget pick, it fits the bill.

Yeti Tundra 45 Cooler, $300

I told you a couple of paragraphs ago that the $300 Yeti Tundra 45 was our top-performing cooler, https://www.facebook.com/ but I should also add that it really wasn’t close. With walls that are about 2.75 inches thick, it’s insulated better than any other cooler that I’ve tested to date, which is key for performance in a portable cooler.

Lots of insulation means that the Yeti can do more with less. With just 3 pounds of ice — not even enough to fully cover the bottom of the cooler — the Yeti was able to pull its internal ambient temperature down by almost 25 degrees, the second biggest temperature drop of the group. The cooler from Cabela’s hit a minimum temperature that was about 1 degree lower, but unlike the Yeti, it wasn’t able to hold that minimum for long periods of time. In fact, after 24 hours in a climate-controlled room set to 70 degrees, the Yeti was the only cooler that still had ice in it. After 48 hours, it was the only cooler that still hadn’t returned to room temperature.

You’ll want to check out my full review of this bear resistant, heavy duty cooler to get a better sense of just how badly it smoked the competition, but a good analogy would be a horse that separates itself from the pack early on and wins its race in a breakaway finish. I wish the Tundra 45 offered more capacity for the price, but if you just want the cooler that’ll keep your ice frozen the longest, this is the one.

Lifetime High Performance Cooler, $100

Enlarge ImagePelican’s rotomolded coolers come in a wide range of great-looking colors, and each comes with a lifetime warranty — they’re worth a look if you just want something eye-catching.

Pelican If you want a cooler that feels modern and fancy, but you aren’t ready to dish out hundreds of dollars for a rotomolded model, consider the Lifetime High Performance Cooler, which I found on sale at Walmart for $97 (though it’s currently out of stock). It was a top-five performer in my tests, essentially tying the excellent Igloo MaxCold while also offering a significant step up in build quality.

The Lifetime cooler isn’t rotomolded, but that’s the kind of aesthetic that it offers. Call it a lookalike if you must, but it’s a very good one, with elegant roped handles, dual-locking lid latches and even a built-in bottle opener, something you won’t get with the Yeti or Orca we tested. It’s also bigger than both of those pricier options, coming in at a bigger-than-advertised 62.4 quarts. If you’re looking for a top performer that looks the part, Lifetime’s design offers the most bang for your buck.

Available at LifetimeLooking for something eye-catching that’ll stand out the next time you’re tailgating? Check out Pelican. I wasn’t terribly impressed with the performance as compared with other rotomolded coolers, but the brand offers one of the best ranges of color options that you’ll find as you shop, and most of the colors don’t cost anything extra. I’ll add that the Pelican cooler is one of the only models we’ve tested that comes with a lifetime warranty.

Rovr Rollr 60 Cooler, $399

You’ve got lots of options if you want a wheeled cooler, but if it were me, I’d save up and plunk down $400 for the Rovr Rollr 60. Though it wasn’t quite as strong of a performer as the Yeti or Orca, it still finished our tests with above-average cooling capabilities, and it was, by far, the easiest and most comfortable cooler to transport from point A to point B, as long as we didn’t have to carry it for very long. With 9-inch wheels and a frame built from stainless steel and aluminum, the Rollr is quite heavy even before you start loading cans, water bottles and other beverages into it.

On top of that, I like the included removable fabric wagon bin and the plastic dry bin that helps you keep your food and beverages separate from wet ice. If you’re willing to pay a little extra, you can customize your cooler with extras like a built-in prep board for campsite cooking, stainless-steel bottle holders or even a $50 “Bikr Kit” that makes it easy to tow the Rollr behind a bike (though, at almost $400 for the cooler, I wish at least one or two of these kits came included).

In fairness, we’ve only tested a couple of wheeled coolers so far, and the Rollr was the only one that I’d be happy to own. If I find a better value pick in the future I’ll update this space, but for now, I think Rovr’s wheeled cooler is well worth the money.

Igloo Recool, $10

Enlarge ImageIn our 70-degree test lab, the Igloo Recool held our test beverages below 40 degrees for a good 15 hours before things started to heat back up.

Ry Crist/CNET One last recommendation — Even if you don’t want to spend more than $20 on a cooler, you might as well not bother with cheapies like the Igloo Island Breeze and Rubbermaid Ice Chest coolers that I managed to score on sale for as little as $15. The latches and hinges felt flimsy, they both lack a drain, and neither one performed any better than a cheap Styrofoam cooler from the gas station.

Of course, Styrofoam buildup is a big problem in landfills these days, so for an eco-friendly alternative, go with the Igloo Recool. Available at an REI co-op, grocery store, super market, or gas station near you for about $10, the Recool is a reusable cooler made from recycled tree pulp with environmentally safe additives to help it hold water and keep things cold. It only promises 12 hours of ice retention, and at 18 quarts, it doesn’t offer room for much more than six cans or so — but hey, that’s still enough for a quick day trip to the beach with a buddy. If a small cooler is all you need, it’ll do the job.

The Recool didn’t hold the cold quite as well as Styrofoam when I tested it out, but it still performed as promised. Sitting in our 70-degree test lab with a small bag of ice from the gas station in it (roughly 7 pounds), the Recool was able to keep six Diet Cokes down at cold temps for a good 15 hours. Afterward, just dump the water out and let it air dry.

Read more about the Igloo Recool
Available at REIThe $8 Vericool Ohana is a little bigger than the Recool, but it isn’t available in stores yet.

Chris Monroe/CNET If you need something a little bigger than the Recool’s 18 quarts, then you could opt for the Vericool Ohana, another eco-friendly disposable cooler that comes in a 42-quart size for just $8. The rub is that it’s currently only available direct from Vericool’s website, and you’ll need to pay extra for shipping (here in Kentucky, that brought the total up to $22).

Still, in addition to being reusable and biodegradable like the Recool, the Ohana is also recyclable (the Recool isn’t because of some of the additives it uses for waterproofing). Vericool tells us that it’s in talks to get the Ohana into retail outlets like convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations, so keep an eye out — and rest assured that, like the Recool, the Ohana passed our tests with flying colors.

Quality & Simplicity Just Got Better

All Ultra Electronics businesses, including Magicard, conduct an annual strategy review, looking at the next 5 years of business. This is completed by the summer of each year. So, as we enter 2006, it is good to look again at the market and check that the strategy still stands up.

What we are seeing is that the ID card printing market continues to be strong in 2006, with printer volume sales increasing, driven by the growing need for security and personal identification. For us, there are some particular market drivers, which this article expands on.

    * The growing significance of Asian markets.
    * Increased use of Contactless cards.
    * Smaller companies buying ID card printers.

MAGICARD PRINTERS NOW MANUFACTURED IN ASIA

While all markets for ID card printing continue to grow, Asian markets are becoming a larger part of the global picture. This is driven by two main trends; large project business, such as Government projects or mass transit applications; companies of all kinds seeing an increasing need for security and identification.

For Magicard, we are addressing this in a number of ways. The most significant is that we are now manufacturing our Magicard Opera, Tempo, and Alto printers in China. This provides us with a good position from which to increase sales across Asia. These printers are our compact models, designed for https://www.facebook.com/ individual companies to use, and are thus very suitable for use by manufacturing and service companies across Asia.

We are also expanding our sales a complete, printed and encoded card can be immediately issued to the card holder.

Most contactless cards nowadays are flat and can be printed on consistently; however, some cards, particularly those that combine contactless technology with contact chips, can still be difficult to print on every time. This is where reverse-transfer printing comes in, such as is used by the Magicard Prima 2e. Reverse transfer is a technology where the image is printed onto a re-transfer film, which is then laminated onto the card. This has the advantage that virtually any card can be printed onto, irrespective of surface irregularities or material type. The Magicard Prima 2e reverse transfer printer can also be fitted with various contactless encoders for one-stop card issuance.

In summary, the technology to print and encode contactless cards with desktop ID card printers is well established, and users should not be afraid of specifiying contactless cards to enhance the security and user friendliness of their ID cards.

SMALL COMPANIES BUY THEIR OWN ID CARD PRINTER

If you look at ID card printers now, you will see a revolution in what you can buy.

    * Printers which are easier to install and use than your office ink-jet.
    * Smaller printers, mechanically less complex and more robust.
    * A very attractive price to buy and https://www.facebook.com/ to run.

This means that even small companies or organisations, as low as 50 or 100 people in size, can now afford their own printer, and that they don’t need to employ experts to operate and support the printer.

An example of a new, no-nonsense design is the Magicard Tempo ID card printer. Compared to printers in the past, the Tempo is a much simpler design. It is only 20 cm each side and weighs just over 3kg, thus making it very portable. If used together with a notebook computer, the Tempo provides a portable printing solution that can be easily taken to branch offices. The Tempo is a hand-fed printer – the user feeds in one card at a time, holding it by the edges to keep it clean. For many applications, https://www.facebook.com/ this is quick and convenient, and even allows for easy double-sided card printing – just flip the card over and print the other side.

CONCLUSIONS

So, having re-visited our business strategy with the benefit of the first few months of 2006 behind us, we are confident that the strategy is still the right one.

We have invested in manufacturing in Asia, and in expanding our product range in both the high-end reverse transfer printers like the Magicard Prima 2e and the low-end compact printers like the Magicard Tempo and Alto, we are looking forward to not just a successful 2006 in Asia, but also a successful 2007 to 2010!

Norton AntiVirus 2009 review: Norton AntiVirus 2009

Symantec has been listening to its users, and this year the company delivers a slimmed-down and https://www.facebook.com/ faster Norton AntiVirus 2009. Almost all the security vendors have recognized the changing threat landscape and have rethought traditional protection. We especially like the Insight feature, which identifies “trusted” files and applications and doesn’t waste time rescanning them unless there’s been a change. No other product does this. The redesigned logic behind Norton AntiVirus 2009 clearly shows in CNET performance testing: it is faster and considerably lighter than last year’s version. Norton continues to win awards in third-party effectiveness testing. Lagging behind, though, is Symantec’s technical support. While Norton users now have free telephone support, Symantec still doesn’t provide enough of a knowledge base, or even an adequate user’s manual. Once again, this year it emphasizes its premium services a bit too much. That said, Norton AntiVirus 2009 presents a remarkable transformation of a product and is worth a second look.

Installation
On our test system, we downloaded Norton AntiVirus 2009 and installed the product within a minute. Instead of relying upon Microsoft’s installer, which Symantec has blamed for much of its past product bloat, the company started over, designing its own installer. There is the added advantage that as criminals target MSI files (say to prevent you from installing a security defense product on your already compromised machine) Symantec won’t be affected–for now. The new installer process works fast, borrowing streaming technology from its Norton Ghost product. On both Windows Vista and Windows XP test machines, we were up and running in one minute and without a reboot.

Should you want to uninstall, Norton includes an uninstall option. In the past, Norton left a mess. Now, after rebooting our machine, what is left behind is licensing information.

Interface
Speaking of a mess, we didn’t like last year’s Halloween colors on the user interface. This year’s redesign is much cleaner and more sophisticated, one befitting a major security product, and the colors used on the Interface can be changed if you want. Also gone are the tabs reminding you that you can purchase other Norton products. Specific tools can be turned on and off easily without diving into the configuration settings. The configuration settings page itself is always one click below the main page. The interface also offers a pop-up dialogs to explain specific terms, although thorough explanations of the choice users have in changing the settings is still lacking.

In the lower left-hand panel are two bar graphs representing the overall Windows resources used and one for the specific resources used by the Norton product. Compared with the resources used reported within the Task Manager in Windows, we noticed a slight sync problem between what Windows reported and what Norton reported for the overall system. Symantec confirmed that while Norton AntiVirus 2009 is looking at the Windows Task Manager, https://www.facebook.com/ it is doing so at different intervals. We like the transparency, and think the presentation here is better than the line graphs used in some other security applications. Should you want line graphs, an icon will reveal how the system and Norton CPU usage has been since the system was last rebooted.

Features
Norton has, in the past, included some sophisticated technology from its enterprise products, which is good because it’s cutting-edge, but it’s also bad, because it doesn’t necessarily integrate with the product, nor is it necessary. In Norton AntiVirus 2009, they seem to have found the right balance.

Whitelisting, the buzzword of security products for 2009, is included, and by marrying it with other technologies, Symantec makes it more suited for the user. Files on a whitelist are deemed trusted, and thus do not need to be scanned as often. Not all “safe files” make it onto the whitelist. For those, Norton uses a community process, called Insight, similar to that used by other security products such as Haute Secure. The thinking is that if thousands of other people are using this suspicious file, chances are it’s not a new piece of malicious software but a new application. On the other hand, if only a few are using it, then maybe it’s worth it to take another look to see if it’s malicious software.

Malicious software signature updates are provided much faster, https://www.facebook.com/ in some cases within five minutes of the last update.

Gone is the awful LiveUpdate component of past Norton products. With 2009 products, Symantec is providing antimalware definition signatures every few minutes or so. On the interface, you’ll see a notice indicating how many minutes since the last update. We didn’t see definitions older than four minutes in our testing.

Missing still are the various security utilities provided in other products, namely McAfee VirusScan. We would like to see, for instance, a secure file eraser or the capability to trace potentially malicious IP addresses within Norton AntiVirus 2009. Nor is there any mobile-specific security solution provided within Norton AntiVirus 2009.

Performance
In CNET Labs’ performance tests, Norton AntiVirus 2009 scored better than last year on our test Windows XP systems. In third-party, independent AntiVirus testing using live viruses, Norton products have scored in the upper ranks, although not always in the top position. On the CNET iTunes test, Norton AntiVirus 2009 scored close to the test system result at 271 seconds, 5 seconds faster than the standalone version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009. On the CNET Microsoft Office test, Norton AntiVirus 2009 finished at a respectable 1,443 seconds, placing near the middle. In a test scanning a single folder with compressed and media files, Norton AntiVirus 2009 came in at 191 seconds, which was the upper end of middle. In terms of boot speed, once again Norton came at a fast 31 seconds.

How to Detect and Prevent a WordPress Spam Injection Attack

Last month my WordPress blog was the victim of a spam injection attack. I am the art director for a highly rated graphic design and website design company. I have years of experience in website design, WordPress Blog Design and https://www.facebook.com/ I am security minded in my approach to web development – I was still a victim of clever hacking. It can happen to anyone and it is happening at an increasingly alarming rate. The worst part about this experience was that not only my WordPress blog was attacked – my entire corporate website was removed from Google SERPS. We were ranked in the Google Top 10 for several coveted spots such as; graphic design company, packaging design companies, brand identity company, and many more. Our site was completely out of Google search results for two weeks in which time we lost countless leads. This experience absolutely sickened me! It also created way too many hours of work dedicated to repairing the hackers damage and recovering our website’s Google Rankings. During my research into fixing the spam injection hackers damage I discovered that this is a widespread problem with WordPress blogs. It’s happening to thousands of people and it is not limited to people using older versions of WordPress.

Recovering from a WordPress Spam Injection attack is not fun, but you can regain your Google Website Rankings after being hacked by a spam injection attack. If you’ve been compromised, hopefully you have your website and WordPress blog backed up. It can be a pretty tedious process to go through every file and folder on your server locating and deleting spam files. I recommend backing up your WordPress posts and completely removing all files and databases from your server. Then do a complete fresh upload of your website and a complete reinstall of WordPress.

If you have already been removed from Google Search Results then you will want to notify Google immediately of what has happened. The best policy with Google is to be specific in your explanations. You will need to make sure that you have removed all bad files from your server and then contact Google again explaining what actions you have taken to resolve the situation and https://www.facebook.com/ submit your “request for reconsideration”. In most cases where a valid site has been hacked Google will restore their sites rankings within two weeks. However, don’t expect any notifications from Google on their progress of reevaluating your website or WordPress blog. I am writing this article in hopes that it will help anyone from having to go through that processs.

What should you look for if you suspect a WordPress Spam Injection Attack?

The first thing you should look for is a list of spammy keywords showing up in your list of keywords located in your Google Webmasters Tools. If you aren’t using Google Webmaster Tools then you should definitely look into this. When your site starts showing up in weird looking search results, which can also be seen in Google Webmaster Tools under search results for your site, you need to act fast because at this point Google will act fast to remove your site from SERPS in order to protect others who may be at risk from visiting your website.

The key to detection is awareness. Be vigilant in monitoring your website and https://www.facebook.com/ your website’s stats. Spam injections are a clever, effective form of hacking and show no outward signs of infection. However, If you do a Google Site Search for spammy key words like; site:yoursite.com viagra you will be able to see if your site is referencing spam keywords. You will not be able to see spam showing up on your site. In order to physically see spam tags in your site you must go to the “cached” version of your web pages and view them in “text mode”. If you’ve been infected you will now be able to see spam keywords, usually appearing as a footer.

What does a Spam Injection Do?

Spam Injection software hides spam keyword links in code that is usually encoded with a PHP function that effectively scrambles html to be decoded once safely embedded on your server, https://www.facebook.com/ database, etc. You won’t see these files decoded, but the Google Bot and other bots will when crawling your site! Once the Bots access the code the spam injection software has done it’s work, effectively stealing your search index to improve their own pagerank.

These spam injection hacks are very hard to detect software injections inserted into your site, usually on a database level, via templates or plugins. This is part of the reason WordPress is such a target for these attacks. Plugins are what make WordPress so dynamic and cool, but they are an open doorway for spam injection software. For obvious reasons we should all focus our attention on prevention so that you don’t have to deal with detection.

What can I do to prevent a WordPress Spam Injection Attack?

I’ll start with the simplest things you can do to protect your WordPress blog or site from spam attacks first. . .

First: Update WordPress
Updating WordPress is the easiest thing to do, so why not do it? I usually wait a short period of time after a new release to make sure the bug fixes have been worked out. Please be aware that simply updating WordPress is NOT enough!

Second: Pick a good password
Pick a good password. Don’t use the same password on every site. If you’re really diligent you can also change your password regularly.

Third: Change the admin user name
The default WordPress user name is “admin”. This is just a guess, but I suspect that the majority of people never change this. Don’t give any information away. Hackers are clever, but like burglars they would rather move on to the easy score. You can change your admin by creating a new user and then deleting the admin user. You’ll be given the option to migrate posts to another user.

Fourth: Hide your WordPress Version Number

David Kierznowski of blogsecurity.net lately released a simple plugin to hide your wordpress installation version number. The no version plugin is a simple plugin that will replace the version number with blanks, so anyone doing a view “page source” from the browser on your site will not be able to see your wordpress version.

Fifth: Protect your plugins
Plugins are the easy gateway way for hackers to access your blog. All WordPress files begin with (wp-) by default so, hackers can quickly discover which plugins you’re using by going to /wp-content/plugins/, if you haven’t renamed your database files. A quick remedy to block a blank index.html file in the wp-content/plugins/ folder.

More Complex Procedures:

First: Protecting your WP-Config file.
This file contains your database name, https://www.facebook.com/ database username and database password. Obviously, you don’t want anyone to have access to something this valuable. If you don’t feel comfortable making changes to your config you may want to contact your hosting company for help otherwise you can add the following code to your .htaccess file:

PHP: 1. # protect wpconfig.php 2. 3. order allow,deny 4. deny from all 5.

Second: Change your database names

Note: do not attempt this unless you are comfortable with PHPMyAdmin and making changes to MySQL. If you are not comfortable with this you should hire a professional to assist you.

Begin by backing up your database!

Many people have problems with the database table name prefix changing functionality of WP Security Scan. You can manually change your database names following the instructions below.

1. BACKUP your WordPress database to a sql file – you can do this in “phpmyadmin”.
2. You should Deactivate your plugins as a precaution before proceeding. You can reactivate them after you have finished.
3. Make a copy of the .sql file you created, then you can open the .sql file and use a text editor to find and replace all “wp_” prefix to “rename_”.
4. Now, drop all tables of your WordPress databases, but DO NOT drop the database.
5. import the (.sql) file that you have just edited into your wordpress databases.
6. Finish by editing your wp-config.php file and change the $table_prefix = ‘wp_’; to $table_prefix = ‘something_’;

I hope that this article will help someone avoid the fallout associated with a spam injection hack. I love the functionality of WordPress, but unfortunately, this experience has left me so cautious that my company no longer uses a WordPress Blog along with our corporate website. Maybe someday.

AVG Antivirus 8 review: AVG Antivirus 8

The biggest news with AVG Anti-Virus 8 is that it includes Linkscanner, a technology that actively blocks malicious content from Web sites that may have been hijacked or otherwise compromised. Also, antivirus, https://www.facebook.com/ antispyware, and antirootkit preventions have been combined into one product. The new drive-by download protection combined with AVG’s award winning effectiveness in blocking and removing antivirus and antispyware code is tempered only by its somewhat slow performance in CNET Labs benchmark tests. While individual applications loaded fast, https://www.facebook.com/ scan and boot times trended toward the slow end.

File:Facebook icon.svg - WikipediaInstallation
We were able to download and install AVG Anti-Virus 8 on a Dell XPS machine running Windows XP SP2 with no difficulty and without rebooting. If you are upgrading from a previous version of AVG, you must uninstall that version first before installing version 8.0. AVG provides a fully functional 30-day trial. While installing, AVG asks one critical question: https://www.facebook.com/ do you want to install the security toolbar? Since it’s hard to say whether you want that, we recommend saying no. Although AVG recommends installation, we found that it installs a prominent search box with Yahoo as the default search engine, and little else. Even without the toolbar, we were still able to use the Linkscanner technology.

After installation, AVG walks you through seven steps:

Screen one merely describes the wizard

Screen two asks how often AVG should update itself

Screen three asks if you want to report compromised Web sites to AVG

Screen four asks if you want to use the Yahoo search as your Internet browser default (this is the second time you asked to adopt the Yahoo search engine; if you installed the security toolbar, you’ll already have Yahoo on your browser via the toolbar)

Screens five and six lets you to download updates

The seventh step tells you that the seven-step process you’ve completed is just the first part.
We do not like the interface in AVG Anti-Virus 8. Although it is an improvement over the previous design, the right windowpane is too crowded with large icons. There are nine icons in all. Below each is a statement telling you if that feature is active. Clicking an icon will run either access additional information about that tool or run that specific scan.

The left windowpane includes only three options, Overview (the icon view in the right hand window), Computer Scanner, and Update Now. Computer Scanner has but one option, scan all. Update Now is equally opaque, mysteriously searching and downing something onto your PC.

A toolbar above these windows contains the advanced feature options.

Should you wish to remove AVG Anti-Virus 8, there is a removal option under All Programs. After a reboot, we found a handful of registry entries related to the free trial, and some empty directories in our system directory.

Norton security 2008 review: Norton security 2008

We were definitely not wowed this year by Symantec’s Internet security offering; in fact, it feels a like a step backward to products the company offered years ago. Norton Internet Security 2008 offers top-notch security tools for today’s threats, but its tools do not always integrate well, nor are they adequately explained. In at least one scenario, we were able to turn off one security feature only to have another security feature prompt us to provide personal information to a fraudulent Web site–while Symantec declined to call it a flaw, we differ. Also, with Norton Internet Security 2008, we experienced more than one system slowdown associated with the Symantec LiveUpdate process, further dampening our enthusiasm for the product. And we were very disappointed to see paid services once again promoted within the technical support section. Norton Internet Security 2008 falls well short of our high expectations for a market leader and only manages a “good” recommendation from CNET.

Facebook\u2019s User Growth Helped Q1 Earnings To Beat Expectations | DeadlineSetup
Norton Internet Security 2008 currently costs $69.95 for a three-user license. By comparison, McAfee Internet Security 2008 currently protects three users for $69.95 and includes protection for mobile devices (something Norton does not). Kaspersky Internet Security offers its three-user license for $79.95.

Norton Internet Security 2008 only on Windows XP and Windows Vista. McAfee and Kaspersky both run on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. Norton Internet Security 2008 requires at least 256MB of RAM and a whopping 350MB hard drive. Symantec does offer a full function 15-day trail of Norton Internet Security 2008.

LiveUpdate, which used to be a separate process, is now integrated into Norton Internet Security 2008–and about time. Once the product is installed and you’re asked to update, everything–program files and signature files–arrive on your desktop together, making the experience smoother and easier. Symantec says this year’s LiveUpdate packets are more compressed. Unfortunately, you’ll be asked to reboot our machine with each new update but we experienced other problems with the new LiveUpdate process.

Over the years we’d heard from people who’d had performance issues with Norton products but we hadn’t recently experienced any performance issues ourselves–until now. More than once while reviewing Norton Internet Security 2008, our Dell XPS machine running Windows XP froze. During the freeze events, our Windows Task Manager revealed that aupdate.exe (Symantec’s LiveUpdate service) was stuck, consuming more than 50 percent of our system resources. After waiting a few minutes–assuming the update would complete on its own–we were still unable to use the desktop and, worse, were unable to shut down the system without a hard reboot. Symantec says they haven’t heard any consumer complaints like ours.

Should you decide to uninstall Norton Internet Security 2008, there is an uninstall option on the All Programs listing, but we found it wasn’t perfect. The uninstall option, according to Symantec, is no more effect ive than the Windows Add/Remove option. In other words, it won’t necessarily remove all traces of Norton Internet Security 2008 from your PC. To do so, https://www.facebook.com/ says Symantec, you will need to use the Norton Removal Tool. According to Symantec, this Norton Removal Tool “uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.” The difference, we were told, is that “the removal tool will remove shared components, like LiveUpdate, even if other Norton products that depend on the shared component are installed.” Symantec does not recommend this removal tool if you have other Symantec products installed. In the end, however, ever after using both the uninstall application and the Norton Removal Tool, we still found registry keys and program file folders on our test machine. These we had to remove manually before installing our next text Internet Security package.

Interface
If first impressions are everything, Norton Internet Security 2008 loses us at “Hello.” The new interface, shared among all 2008 Norton security products except Norton 360, is dark and garish, https://www.facebook.com/ almost a perverse joke on those seeking reassuring security for their desktop. The use of ominous thick black borders and bright yellow/orange graphics suggests Halloween, a look that could get old by March. Unlike with Kaspersky, you can’t change the look and feel of Norton Internet Security 2008. Unlike McAfee Internet Security 2008, Norton’s interface isn’t very intuitive or pleasing to the eye.

Heavy black borders with orange/yellow graphics with blue text on white background is a mess to look at, let alone use. Our central problem is that while Norton Internet Security 2008 offers some useful features, we had no way of tweaking or learning more about any of the features. Drilling down into the configuration settings, we see “Turn on Suspicious Activity Monitoring” or “Turn on Bloodhound heuristics”–but do we really need these features? Symantec provides us with very little additional information (for example, the built-in Help file says only “Turn on Bloodhound heuristics,” not what it does), continuing with a practice adopted long ago by Symantec of making decisions for the user rather than presenting the user with options. Then there’s my favorite “Turn on Advanced Mode” under the Suspicious Activity Monitor–it’s not on by default, so should we turn it on? (Apparently the only difference between regular and Advance Mode is that the Suspicious Activity Monitor will log it in regular and alert you in Advanced mode.) Again, you have to accept that Norton has your best interests in mind.

Kaspersky Internet Security also uses similar enable/disable options–that’s really not at issue here. The difference between these products is that Kaspersky offers a thorough PDF user’s manual explaining your choices. Norton does not. Unless you are fluent in Symantec speak, configuration options such as Bloodhound, Browser Defender, https://www.facebook.com/ and SONAR are meaningless. Nor can you truly customize these in any meaningful way, with few options to provide unique rules. Symantec limits (if not removes) a user’s ability to customize and tweak individual settings throughout Norton Internet Security 2008; for https://www.facebook.com/ example, there’s no quick way to set Norton to only scan new or recently modified files. Head-to-head, Kaspersky and McAfee both give users more enable/disable options.

We’re also not keen on Symantec’s use of a large yellow block in the task tray that says Norton all the time. While other vendors have discrete icons, even icons that rotate or blink, we found the constant advertisement in the lower-right-hand corner visually distracting and unnecessary. Norton Internet Security 2008’s pop-up alerts were no bigger or smaller than its competitors.

Features
Norton Internet Security 2008 includes all the basic features within Norton Antivirus 2008. Additional features include wireless protection and transaction security. What Norton Internet Security doesn’t include is backup and restore protection or https://www.facebook.com/ PC maintenance–both of which are provided in McAfee Internet Security 2008. For the Norton version of these, you’ll have to purchase additional Symantec products.

CheckPoint - Facebook - YouTubeWithin Norton Internet Security, we really didn’t like the antiphishing feature. It’s not that it doesn’t work–the antiphishing feature within Norton Internet Security 2008 works very well. It’s when you turn it off (as we did from time to time during our testing), that we found it’s harder to turn back on than other antiphishing tools on the market today. And, more ominously, without Norton antiphishing turned on, Norton Transaction Security features remain active, allowing us to provide personal information to various phishing sites.

ESET NOD32 3.0 Antivirus System (Windows) review: ESET NOD32 3.0 Antivirus System (Windows)

Wow. Eset NOD32 3.0 delivers a easy-to-use version of its award-winning antivirus engine. Finally, ease of use meets best-in-class protection. A second product, Eset NOD32 Smart Security, includes personal firewall, https://www.facebook.com/ antispam, and antispyware in addition to antivirus protection. Although our performance testing was mixed, NOD32 continues to rank among the best-rated antivirus products by independent antivirus testing labs and ranks near the top of our list alongside our Editors’ Choice of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Facebook down for maintenance on March 27 | Down TodaySetup and https://www.facebook.com/ interface
NOD32 is among the few antivirus products that still supports Windows 2000 and XP as well as Windows Vista.

With version 3, Eset finally gets the NOD32 interface right. After years of dealing with the cumbersome AMON (monitors the overall file system), DMON (monitors documents), and https://www.facebook.com/ EMON (monitors e-mail transactions), we get version 3.0 with a completely intuitive and easy-to-use interface. There are two versions of the interface: standard and advanced. The left-hand column features Protection Status, Computer scan, https://www.facebook.com/ Update, Setup, Tools (in Advanced mode only), and Help. The right window pane is reserved for the active feature in use. In Advanced mode, across the top is a toolbar to access the more advanced configuration options.

At first glance, the interface is easy for anyone new to antivirus protection. But digging deeper we were happy to find all the advance tweaks that anyone could ask for https://www.facebook.com/ within reach. Symantec has gone in the opposite direction, making all the tools simply enable and disable, but Eset has left a number of intermediate options available to the more advanced users.

Should you need to remove NOD32 from your computer, there is an uninstall option. After a reboot we found almost no evidence of the product on our machine.

Features
Eset continues to improve on its ThreatSense technology, allowing NOD32 to be proactive, yet use few system resources. We like the fact that during a scan you can either manually toggle the scan to the forefront or push it into the background.
